As an International Student, What Should I Be Aware of?

For international students, it is different because graduate school can be a way to further your education in the U.S., but you must transfer your visa status. Additionally, your field of study has to directly correlate with your undergraduate degree. Another consideration for finding the right program is what schools and programs service the international student population well and are connected to sponsoring employers.

International students should keep in mind this additional information if they are in F-1 Visa status; the Five-Month Rule. In order to transfer a SEVIS record from Gordon College to the new graduate school, there cannot be more than five months between the end of the Gordon College program (e.g., last day of finals) and the new master's program (e.g., first day of orientation). For example, if you graduate in May, your new master's program must start before October of the same year. If you are going to take a gap of longer than five months, you will need to do OPT or leave the U.S. between Gordon College and your master's program.  Lastly, there could be a required exam that you would have to take before you are accepted, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
