Networking = Informational Interviews
In a nutshell, networking is a type of informational interview.
What is an Informational Interview?
Informational interviews are conversations about a career in that you have to learn more about an industry or the interviewee’s career. The purpose of an informational interview is to gain a better understanding of the interviewee’s point of view and to obtain information as well as general recommendations that will help you build valuable professional relationships.
Informational interviews, like employment interviews, necessitate preparation and investigation. Prepare lists of questions for what you want to learn about the interviewee. Investigate industry trends and use that information to help you formulate some of your inquiries. Agree to meet at a time that is convenient for both of you. Follow up with a thank you note rather than an email after the meeting.
What types of questions can I ask during an informational interview?
- What is your role and what responsibilities do you handle on a day to day basis?
- Why did you decide to enter this field?
- What interested you in this company and why?
- What advice do you have for someone looking to break into this field?
- How would you describe the organization's culture?
- Are there opportunities for ongoing training?
- What's something unique about your job
How do I Dress like the Professional I Want to Become?
Dressing professionally can either be business casual or business formal. Business casual is typically a traditional sense of business clothes, but it is more relaxed than business formal. Articles of clothing that fits into this category include blouses, sweaters, khakis, and dark pants. Business formal is known as the highest level of professional attire. Some examples of business formal attire include button-down jackets, ties, and formal blouses.
